A Journey
Through Time
Every page tells the stories of our shared past, now preserved and ready to rediscover.

ABOUT This project
The making of the Compass Archive
Since 1965, the Cayman Compass and its predecessors have been the islands’ trusted record of news, culture and community. From major events to everyday life, the newspaper pages document the stories that shaped Cayman – and now, for the first time, they are accessible to everyone in one place.
Two years of careful preservation
Building this archive was no small task. During a period of more than two years, tens of thousands of newspaper pages – some yellowed with age, others torn or faded – were carefully scanned to preserve every detail. Each page is a time capsule, capturing the news exactly as readers saw it when first printed.
Bringing history to life with technology
After scanning, a custom-built process powered by artificial intelligence was developed to make these newspapers searchable. Specifically trained systems analysed every page, identified individual articles, and extracted headlines, authors and text – turning decades of printed news into a living, searchable history.
Why it matters
This project is more than just technology – it’s about keeping Cayman’s stories alive. Whether you’re looking for family names, researching historic events, or simply curious about how life once was, these articles connect us to the moments that shaped our islands.
